Orthodox Prayers of Old England
Fr. Aidan's work "Orthodox Prayers of Old England" is essentially a Western version of the "Old Orthodox Prayer Book" which is published by the Old Rite parish of the Nativity in Erie PA (incidentally, please remember to include the recently reposed, his Grace, Bishop DANIEL, who was a supporter of the Western Rite, in your prayers.) Other than propers and commons for the Mass and divine office, it has virtually anything you could think of. Even a very nice service of tonsuring the new beard of a youth, and a prayer for banishing vermin from a house (which I used against my stink bug infestation to great effect.) I especially like the morning and evening prayers (from the Ancrene Wisse) and the Little Office of the Guardian Angel. I particularly like the prayers of compline. The Nunc Dimittis antiphon reads "O my Guardian, who sleepest not, may I, sleeping beneath thee my defender, be not afraid for the terror by night." The collect also is a favorite of mine, "My prayer offered up to Thee, O Lord, mayest Thou mercifully accept through Thy holy angel my Guardian, and by his painstaking remembrance grant that it may serve for my salvation. Through our Lord..." The guide to confession would be a great benefit to anyone of any rite. The rubrics for the Mass are incredibly detailed, and makes me wish that the Sarum rite was more widely available. Fr. Aidan also provides a very nice history of the Mass in the book. For example, I learned that the words "Instructed by saving precepts" was inserted into the Mass by Pope St. Gregory the Great. I don't use this book every day, but I do use it regularly. It contains material not found anywhere else. It can be hard to find, so if you see a copy available for a reasonable price jump on it. I ordered mine from St. John of Kronstadt Press which a couple of other interesting looking books on the Western Rite.

Elizabeth's right. Although you may have to e-mail him directly as I think the checkout system has some problems. It did when I tried to order the fasting book anyway. hieromonachosaidanus@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI love OPOOE and do indeed use it to prepare for confession, (either that or the fourth chapter of St Benedict's rule). I like the inclusion of psalm 133 at Compline (at least, I think it's 133 - I'm still in bed and can't motivate myself to check), and many other things about it. I do hpe that he is able to produce a full psalter soon that may be used privately. I would certainly fork out for that because it would be so beneficial.
I'm glad I have found your blog.
